9/11 2005, Four Years Later.

The world is a different place on this fourth anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. This time last year, I decided to hike / climb up to Camp Muir on Mt. Rainier, to mark the third anniversary of 9/11. While this year, I did not climb to Camp Muir, I thought I would recall part of my day on 9/11, some four years ago.

Four years ago, I was living and working in Redmond, WA, over at the “soft”. During this time, I was the lead engineer for WindowsMedia.com, a Microsoft entrainment and news portal. I remember awaking to an onslaught of early morning pages to my cell phone, indicating various problems. From these pages, I was able to determine that our web traffic levels to our servers had sharply increased. I quickly went into my living room where my roommate was, where he mentioned two jets had flown into the World Trade Center. It was not until later in the day, I would learn the full gravity of the situation, and how the world around me had changed… including me. Our traffic levels spiked, because of the increased load on our systems from users around the world trying to find more information on the attacks. I also distinctly remember not hearing ANY jets or planes for some time, after 9/11. I could however hear late at night jets at very high altitude, although I am not sure what they were… I am guessing military. There was never before a time in my life, when I could not look up in the sky and see a plane flying over. Life seemed to somewhat normalize after the FAA started to allow both commercial and private jets to fly again… I have never been so excited too see planes fly above me.

Hurricane Katrina.

Over the last couple of days, I have been glued to the “net”, watching and reading the stories coming out of Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama… all of which focus on the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. It is hard for me to comprehend that the US has lost complete control of one of its major cities, New Orleans… and not just a small section but also the vast majority if not all of it. It is hard for me to comprehend what appears to be a systematic failure across multiple levels of government, and the very fabric of society is failing apart in New Orleans.

You mean to tell me Senator Mary Landrieu (D) actually represents folks from Louisiana. I am not usually quick to judge a person… I hope her constituents take her paycheck and use it for relief efforts.

It is my believe that, this event is a historic event, and while the hurricane was a catastrophe itself… the systematic breakdown is of equal catastrophe, I hope we the people and government are able to learn from this experience. The next catastrophe is coming; it is not a matter of if, but when.
